If my sudden case of allergies is any indication, spring has sprung.
This past week, we hit the one year mark of international lockdowns to prevent the spread of COVID-19. One year later and millions of cases later, here we are: vaccinations are being served, and states are slowly lifting restrictions and masks mandates. Whether or not that’s too early isn’t my place to say, but I am very looking forward to a world where this doesn’t exist anymore.
I don’t necessarily mind being indoors all day. As a Floridian, I know that the mid-sixties mornings will give way to muggy sunrises in weeks. Florida has two seasons: hot and less hot. In other parts of the world, though, as winter ends, snow melts and warmth fills the air and the spirit. Not only was this week the mark of a year of COVID, but it also was the first day of spring.
Obviously, I’m partial to the cooler months, but there’s beauty in everything, and that includes the springtime! Here’s a round of this or that to celebrate the new season.
- Tulips or daisies? Tulips! Daisies are pretty too, but I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Keukenhof Tulip Gardens in Amsterdam. It’s one of the prettiest, most calming places I’ve ever seen. Tulips have that memory association, so they win this round.
- Hiking or kayaking? Kayaking. I love all water-based activity, whether it’s swimming, rafting, and yes, kayaking. I love a good hike, but not in the heat. I’d kayak any time of the year.
- Sundress or overalls? Here’s a real fun fact: I do NOT like wearing dresses. Unless I’m attending an event where Batman might show up to save us when the Joker crashes the party, you will rarely find me choosing to wear a dress over pants. Overalls win, 100 percent.
- Flowers or plants? Pretty pretty flowers. I’d rather look at flowers, but keep a cactus or an aloe plant. My thumb is the farthest thing from green.
- Rain boots or sandals? Rain boots are comfortable, stylish, and keep you dry. They also probably won’t give you blisters, which is more than I can say for sandals!
- Pastel colors or neutral colors? I often lean towards neutral colors, since pastels can tend to wash me out or throw off my natural skin color. I do dabble in light pinks, but I’m more of a jewel tone fan!
- April showers or May flowers? April showers! I love the rain! Lightning is scary, but a good deluge with some thunder is comforting to me, as long as I’m safe beneath a thick and cozy blanket.
- Birds or butterflies? Butterflies feel more magical, but birds are just as beautiful! Consider a robin, a bluejay, or a cardinal. I’m going to say birds, because they’re related to dinosaurs. That’s pretty cool.
- Cleaning or playing? Playing! Drop me off at the park and I’ll go on the swings by myself. I want to go to the adult-sized outdoor (and indoor) parks I see on the internet. They seem so fun! I want to climb things and get stuck at the top. It’s like a metaphor for life.
- Umbrella or hat? I like hats! Umbrellas can be super cumbersome to carry around, because more often than not, an umbrella is either going to be not needed or leave puddles on the floor when you get under cover. Hats are simple and can stay on your head even if the weather changes.
Bring on the rain, the flowers, and the cute clothes… but, maybe go easy on the heat?
