On this first day of the Jewish New Year, here is a brief look at my TV Status: what I’ve watched, what I’m watching now, and what is to come.
One of my 2021 New Years’ resolutions was to watch several series that I had been told, over and over, to watch. As I took on that task, I realized that I forgot several shows on that list! I then forged a new list. Nine months into 2021, and I realize now that even THAT list wasn’t entirely complete, either!
So, what of it all? Will I ever truly “catch up” with all of these shows? I don’t know. As my current TV status proves, I forget and discover new series all the time! TV will always have my heart. But enough preamble! Let’s get to the goods.
TV STATUS: Where I’ve Gone
My 2021 New Years status, regarding television, was thus: Finally watch “The Crown,” “Little Fires Everywhere,” “The Undoing,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor.”
I completed this task, with great aplomb. I loved the fourth season of “The Crown,” and burned through both “Haunting” series over the course of maybe four days TOTAL. However, it didn’t take me long to realize that this small undertaking was just that: small. There was so much left to watch! As a result, this second list was compiled. From that list, a THIRD list was created!
From that second list, I have watched the following:
Elite – I contemplated taking sick days to watch this all in one go. It was incredible.
Invincible – I burned through this in two days. Everyone told me it was too violent, and they were incorrect. I’m tough!!
Ratched – Stylish and imperfect and I would like a season two.
Little Fires Everywhere – Broke my heart and made me uncomfortable, in the best possible way.
In between, my mother and sister told me I had to, NEEDED to, watch “Normal People.” It ripped me in two and I don’t fully forgive them yet. As well, I watched the first 2/3 of “Silicon Valley,” but stopped after Aaron expressed remorse that I started a show about coding without him. I had foolishly thought he had already watched it on his own.
TV STATUS: Where I’m Going
As you can tell, comparatively, I still have a lot to watch from that list! Along with that list, I’ve added some new shows to the equation:
1. Schmigadoon – a musical parody starring Cecily Strong, Keegan Michael Key, and an ensemble of others, including, naturally, Fred Armisen!
2. iCarly – I’ve heard that the iCarly reboot is the best kids show reboot yet.
3. Why Women Kill – I mean, the title alone has my attention.
4. What We Do in the Shadows – A mockumentary style story about vampires, based on the original movie.
5. Dexter – The reboot arrives in November. Delicious.
6. The Morning Show – A cast I love telling a story that’s interesting. Say less.
7. Sex and the City – I want to watch the reboot when it happens!
8. It’s a Sin – My mother and sister told me this show will also break my heart. I’ll watch it, but I’m waiting to spite them for “Normal People.”
9. Mythic Quest – Created by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mchenney from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” I’m told I, specifically, will love it.
10. Adventure Time – A cartoon? Yes. Silly? Yes. On my list? Yes.
11. Modern Love – Anthology series a la Black Mirror that multiple people have told me I’ll love.
12. Hacks – Two female comediennes (from different generations) team up to save their careers. Another show that sounds RIGHT up my alley.
13. Young Royals – A Netflix show that apparently bears similarity to Elite.
14. White Lotus – A bunch of people go on different trips to the same Hawaiian resort. What could go wrong?
15. Servant – My LATEST recommendation. My sister asked that I watch it to make sure it’s not too scary for her. I love a good spook.
TV STATUS: Where I Am Now
I’m currently churning away at “Killing Eve,” which came up in my third list! As well, I’m currently watching “Nine Perfect Strangers,” which feeds my “New Age” curiosity like nothing else on Instagram. From there, I will probably go to “Narcos.”
I will likely update my TV Status one more time before the year has ended!
How do I do it? Watch all these shows, go to work, code, and still make time to do chores and be an attentive member of society? If I did it well enough, I’d tell you.
