Ways I Relax: Taking Time for Myself

Finding time to relax when attempting to have it all can be tricky. Here’s how I like to kick back!

Today, I spent the majority of the day in the crushingly hot sun. Such is life in Florida! Upon coming home, I peeled my sweat-covered clothes off and jumped in the shower. I would rather go from shower fresh to a film, or a movie, but alas, I must write!

Truthfully, writing tonight feels more like an obligation than something to enjoy. I am truly forcing myself to have my computer open right now! However, I can compromise.

After a long day of work, or walking around in the sun, here are my five preferred ways to relax:

  1. Screen time. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve got a long list of TV shows and films to burn through in my playlist. It’s the one most on my mind right now. I just finished season two of “Killing Eve,” and I will be turning on season 3, episode 1 thirty seconds after I press “Publish.”
  2. Spa Bath. Nothing brings me more joy than a “tepid pool of my own filth.” I’m joking! Mostly. I prefer to dim the lights, turn on some Enya, and light a few candles. I prefer my bathwater (and shower water) to be borderline scalding hot. Typically, I let the water get to a piping hot temperature while I pick my luxury to “zhuzh” up the experience.  Some nights I just want bubbles, some nights I want epsom salt! If I’m up to it, I like a good bath bomb to add some scent (or glitter. or both). Hot cocoa is, of course, optional.
  3. Go for a walk. I will forever profess the therapeutic powers of a walk. I like to play some acoustic music and go for a stroll when the weather is nice. It’s a great way to enjoy the world in a quiet moment (or at least, if you’re listening to music, a “scored” moment). Connecting to nature can relax more than you know!
  4. Screen time, part 2: Youtube boogaloo. One of the biggest distractions in my life is Youtube. I fall down rabbit holes quickly! However, taking some time on a Friday night to enjoy social commentary, film analysis, or true crime minisodes never hurt anyone.
  5. ASMR. Yes, this is a category all of its own, even though my chief source is Youtube. Sometimes I pull up Pinterest, or Reddit, and scroll my heart away. However, I’ll queue up some soft-spoken Ted Talk or a calming POV video to set my mind at ease. It’s a great way to soothe your brain. I highly recommend ASMR to anyone who needs help falling asleep at night! Imagine getting a scalp massage, without needing to ask someone for one. The dream.

Having several go-to ways to relax keeps me sane! I realized recently how on the go I am a lot of the time. I work on my goals nearly constantly, even if some days are better than others! As a result, taking time away from those goals to enjoy time to relax helps keep the burnout away. That keeps me on target and my batteries at full charge!
