Thanksgiving recipes travel from family to friends every year! Here’s a few recipes that I’ve gathered for your next allergy-friendly Friendsgiving.
I don’t need to wait until Thanksgiving for Thanksgiving food. Quietly place me in front of a trash bag filled with mashed potatoes and I will need nothing else for three hours. However, if you don’t dream as big as I do, Thanksgiving food only sees the light of day once a year. With “Friends” popularizing the “Friendsgiving,” Thanksgiving food has extended its lifespan to three days! Now THAT is something to celebrate.
Thanksgiving food often triggers memories of apple pie, buttery mashed potatoes, and fresh, warm bread. However, if you abstain from animal byproducts or gluten, consuming Thanksgiving dinner can be a Russian roulette to the gut! Through my years of flexing veganism, I have found quite a few dairy and meat substitutions to use in cooking! In addition, through friendships with Celiacs, I’ve learned the importance of providing a gluten-free side for those who can’t enjoy warm, buttery biscuits!
Thus, behold: Thanksgiving recipes for the whole family!
For the Vegan: I love mashed potatoes. This slow cooker recipe will fill your house with the scent of anticipation! For butter, use Earth Balance!
For the Gluten-Free: This stuffing recipe tastes so good! The mouthfeel is so stellar that skeptics won’t believe it’s not fresh bread used in the recipe. I strongly advocate for using Udi’s French Baguettes for the bread substitute.
For the Vegan and the Gluten-Free: Pastries, to me, are the easiest to make vegan nowadays! However, developing a good gluten free pie crust can be tricky. This book provides a fantastic recipe for a vegan apple pie. From there, substitute your favorite gluten free flour! I prefer this flour blend. Here’s another goodie for the best autumnal treat of them all: gluten free, vegan apple cider donuts.
Thanksgiving dinner celebrates a time of gathering with loved ones. No one should feel excluded based on their dietary restrictions! When substitutions exist that take little effort to make fun, why not make that offer? Eat, drink, and be merry!
