I Like It So I’ll Put A (Few) Rings on it: A Wish List

Last week I expressed my current obsession with rings. Now it’s time for a closer look.

Truthfully, I’m not big on accessories. In my mind, they’re associated with the years of pendants and infinity scarves I wore in efforts to look chic but really just trying to hide my body through distractions. Add on my appreciation for Anna Wintour’s penchant for never carrying a handbag, and I get a very minimalist look whenever I leave the house! However, I’ve been noticing myself liking rings that other people wear.

Sure, as a tween, I used to slip rings on at Claire’s as though a Jonas Brother had just proposed to me (either on a late night show or by illuminating “MARRY ME” on the Empire State Building), but I never really wore them. Nowadays, I feel like the “earthy” girls I follow on Instagram tend to stack jewelry on their wrists and fingers. It’s equal parts chaotic and eclectic. It feels like proof of their worldliness. These girls aren’t wearing multiple 15k platinum bands with heavy diamonds in the center. No, their jewelry reeks of “I got this at a market in Bali” energy.

To that point, I do feel that, like a mood ring from second grade, rings carry a certain energy. Certain rings have spoken to me most, and I’ve put them on a list of things to attain for myself. I don’t have “Go to Bali while I live in Hawaii” money, but I DO have “Maybe Uncommon James will have a sale” money!

  1. A tidal wave ring, to keep the ocean close to me.
  2. A black ring, to give hints that I am in fact a witch, who longs to return to her cottage in the forest to make potions in a cauldron. These potions will serve two purposes: allowing me to travel by smoke, and as plant food to produce mighty crops for stews. Gabbie Hanna actually has a bunch like these, but I don’t know if she’s with the cauldron life.
  3. This specific Loki ring that has taken up residence in my TikTok feed, tempting me beyond all reasoning. It’s green, and I love Loki, so it feels like I MUST have it.
  4. A moonstone ring, to strengthen my feminine energy (I’m kind of a “bruh” girl, so I need all the help I can get).
  5. A ring in the shape of a snake, to wrap around my finger.
  6. A turquoise ring. To be honest, I’m fine with buying all of the first five online, as opposed to, say, earning them in an experience. The turquoise ring, however, is an exception. I know that turquoise has significant meaning in Native American culture. I’d rather go to Arizona or New Mexico and then buy one from a local artist. That feels more like honor and respect than… appropriation?
  7. Uncommon James has a whole guide for creating a ring stack. I’d like to follow it to create a look I love.

I don’t tend to make wish lists outside of the holiday season, but this is more like a bucket list. Wish list implies I’d like them as a gift, but I wouldn’t mind making this journey on my own. If I buy them for myself, it is a further step to developing my own style. I want to cultivate my own collection. Doesn’t that have a nice ring to it?
