Web Development: Revisiting an Old Resolution

I have a lot of goals for web development this year, and I know just where to start!

My brain is on fire today! I really need to drink more water. With my impending migraine and roughly 3000 steps to walk in my day, I’ll keep things short and sweet. I have mentioned multiple times my desire to elevate my coding skills this year. To me, that includes learning new languages and sharpening old ones. Where they overlap: PHP.

Short for PHP Hypertext Processor (yes, that is very dumb, thank you for agreeing with me), PHP is the main programming language for the WordPress backend. WordPress is one of the most popular Content Management Systems used today. Not only will this help further my web development career (though, again, I’m leaning more towards software developer), but I’ve found a great way to exercise my skills.

This very blog: COMPRISED OF WORDPRESS!

In 2021, I had a resolution to redesign the blog. Mission accomplished! However, I still don’t love the design. I did love the pink and seafoam green colours, but I found myself wanting when it came to the built-in, free WordPress themes. Subsequently, my web development skills come into play! I have decided to commit to redesigning this blog, with a template that I build myself.

On a separate, professional level, I hoped to create WordPress themes this year that would feature color blocks prominently. I’ve noticed clients at work choose WordPress themes that showcase large, beautiful photos. However, these templates don’t serve a client well if they don’t have photos! Providing a color based (rather than photography based) option could help fill a gap in the process!

Web development involves the use of CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, to determine the overall look of a site. Most websites use a CSS framework called Bootstrap to format their style choices. I have some experience with Bootstrap and PHP, but this will truly be a learning experience for me, and one that I’m excited to put into execution!
