The Fashion Five: Things I Don’t Have, But Want

New series starting today: The Fashion Five!

Fashion and I have always been fair-weather friends. I love the artistry of the designers, the pageantry of fashion week, and the spectacle of high fashion photo shoots. However, you wouldn’t know that by looking at my closet! I feel like my clothes are faded, mishapened lumps that cover my body, with some exceptions.

I know what I like, and how I want to dress. However, I feel like my knowledge of current designers and fashion houses is slim to none. What’s a household name, and what’s a name that only the people in-the-know will recognize? Most people know Tom Ford, right? Chanel, for sure.

As a result, I’m launching a new series to fully document my fashion journey. Perhaps it should be my “style journey,” though. Yves Saint Laurent once said “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” I want to always be the stylish one in the room, even if that style is simple.

Here’s round one of what I’m dubbing “The Fashion Five”: 5 pieces I want in my closet.

  1. Burberry Coat.

I live in the Sunshine State, so a good trenchcoat does me no good here. However, I don’t want to plant in Florida. Eventually, I want to go somewhere with four seasons, where I’ll need a good coat to go on a walk during a crisp autumn day! I say Burberry, because I like their cuts, but I wouldn’t mind something in a nice pastel color. I have a great raincoat in a scarlet red shade, but I like the idea of a baby blue trench coat.

  2. Christian Louboutin Pumps.

I can thank “The Proposal” for this one. The vision of Sandra Bullock as the HBIC at an NYC publishing firm in sky high business titan pumps cemented itself into my brain. I originally had the dream of using my first official paycheck for my first real job to pay for a pair, but that was before I knew how the real world worked. That said, this will probably be the first high fashion purchase I make for myself. Even if I’m remote the rest of my life, and never see the inside of a corner office at a high rise headquarters, I will have those “bloody shoes.”

  3. Vintage Chanel Handbag.

I rarely carry a handbag (much like fashion legend Anna Wintour. We’re basically the same person). However, a good, timeless bag that holds what I need cannot be overlooked! I’m thinking a Classic Flap matches my desire for classic yet understated.

  4. Thigh High Boots.

I think this is almost exclusively because of Ariana Grande. She has a proclivity for thigh highs that just barely graze her minidresses or oversized hoodies. It’s a cute look that looks cutting edge, when executed right!

  5. Candy Apple Red Off Shoulder Cocktail Dress.

There is something so utterly delicious about an off-shoulder dress. The red just adds to the sultry illusion. I have no particular brand favoritism here! I just need something that will catch the eye of everyone that walks in the room, at this fancy party that I attended, because I’m a fancy person, who attends fancy parties.

These pieces will fit nicely among my jeans, classic tees, and more sneakers than one woman needs. Hey, sneakers go for at MOST $200. Can you say the same for Carrie Bradshaw’s Manolo Blahniks? Fictional or non-fictional, you can’t say the woman didn’t know how to express herself with style. Why haven’t I binge watched Sex and the City yet?

I think my next edition of “The Fashion Five” should be a deep dive into the mecca of American fashion: the September issue of Vogue. See you then!
