I come back stronger than a nineties trend, and so do my 2021 fashion favorites!
My most recent Blogmas post discussed my appreciation for minimalism in style this year. That simple makeup look is timeless and works now, then, and later! However, I don’t know how many of this year’s trends will stick around for another five years. On the other hand, fashion is cyclical! Who knows what could happen in 2022 (3, 4, 5)?
Here’s my top five 2021 Fashion favorites!
2021 Fashion Favorites
- High waisted jeans. The nineties really hit the trends this year! From the wide leg to the mom cut, a modernized image of nineties jeans took off in full force. Paired with a snug, curve hugging top and some boots or sneakers, and you have a great outfit! This trend should stick around forever.
- Vivienne Westwood necklace. This one took me a while to “embrace.” By “embrace,” I mean buy a knockoff from Amazon that looks pretty and cost ten dollars. The Vivienne Westwood pearl choker has experienced a resurgence in popularity, as part of the return to the 90s aesthetic. It’s all over TikTok and top model streetwear! Even Tana Mongeau made her own version, albeit with her fun twist.
- The Bucket Hat. Truthfully, I think that Billie Eilish is the best modern celebrity to wear this look. However, my appreciation of it comes from reading “We Should All Be Mirandas,” which spoke to me on a personal level. The eponymous Miranda Hobbes of “Sex and the City” kept her style basic and second to most. However, she rocked a bucket hat like no one’s business! I have yet to buy one of my own, but I have a sun-filled weekend in the near future. This penchant for the bucket hat seems to only extend to myself in my immediate circle, but sun coverage is sun coverage, right?
- High Top Sneakers and Shorts. Keep cool in all kinds of ways! “That girl” wears high top sneakers and shorts while walking down a sunkissed street in the summer. I love a good Converse high top with a high waisted pair of shorts. However, a pair of vans or even low Converse inspire all the surfer girl vision boards. On cooler days, high top sneakers with an oversized top and bike shorts are casual, cute, and comfortable! To me, those are the three C’s for a perfect outfit.
- Loungewear, loungewear, loungewear! The popularity of Kim Kardashian’s comfy brand combined with the pandemic-induced homebody lifestyle led to a boom in loungewear. As people meander outside, however, the slouchy pants do follow! Similar to the baggy jean style, a cozy pair of pants matched with a snug top make for a very cute “just out to lunch” look.
My 2021 Fashion Favorites have been rising in popularity over time (technically, Kaia Gerber rocked this bucket hat in 2019, pre-pandemic!), but this year they really found their footing. I’m excited to see what trends will rise up in 2022. I hope that some of these trends stick around longer, too. I love nineties jeans! Don’t Google early 2000s jeans and get inspired to bring them back! Just stick with the nineties jeans and nothing else!
